Each artist uses different materials and has a unique approach to making books. These approaches are evident in the statement prepared by each artist that appear in both the how-to book and the exhibit. Some types of books have layers of printed type or painted material, some are made of concrete and found objects. Many have unusual shapes. Some are altered books: previously published material chopped and changed, revitalized. Some books take their cue from conceptual art, others take on a sensibility that cannot be compared to other art forms. Content, form, intent and information are conveyed in mysterious and dynamic ways in this exhibit.
Alisa Golden has been making handmade books under the imprint never mind the press since 1983. She is a graduate in printmaking from California College of Arts and Crafts and a former board member and program director for the Pacific Center for the Book Arts. She is also the author of Creating Handmade Books (Sterling, NY: 1998).
